David Mason Leach passed away May 25, 2014, at the age of 96, at the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls.
He was born in Owatonna, Minn., on Sept. 16, 1917.
During World War II he was stationed in Lexington, Va., and retired as a lieutenant colonel, JAG, after 20 years in the Reserves.
After the war, he married Lucille Dixon and returned to Minnesota to finish his law degree. One daughter, Deborah, was born to that union.
While in Owatonna, David practiced law with his father and served several years as municipal judge. Lucille preceded him in death in 1964. David married Mary Brandley in 1969 and, in his retirement, they moved to the Flathead Valley in 1990 where he finally got his dog.
He was active in the Flathead Valley, preparing income tax returns for the senior citizens, teaching fourth graders cribbage and playing in the Flathead Valley Community Band, Glacier Rag Time Orchestra, Hungry Five Oompa Band and Raz M Taz ensemble. David shared his love of music with his grandson, Mark McCrady, now the band director at Whitefish schools.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Leach, of Kalispell; Deborah Leach Coakley and William of Bluffton, S.C.; James Brandley and Sandra of Ely, Minn.; Steven Brandley and Annette of Okarche, Okla.; Kathryn Brandley Lockerby and Michael of Red Wing, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
David was a faithful Christian, a gentleman and a great example for family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Veterans Home in Columbia Falls, the Humane Society of Northwest Montana or the Flathead Food Bank.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at Kalispell Church of the Nazarene.
Interment will be held in Owatonna at a later date.
