Evelyn Margaret Knutson, 92, passed away on August 8, 2014 at Lake View Care Center in Bigfork with some family by her side. Evelyn was born on August 3, 1922, fourth of five children, to Gerhard G. and Mathilda (Schneider) Gerving, in Glen Ullin, North Dakota. After graduating from Glen Ullin High School in 1940, Evelyn worked for a time as a housekeeper in Glen Ullin and then moved out to Seattle to join 2 of her siblings. She went to work there in the defense effort during Workd War II, as so many people did in the early 1940's. In Seattle, Evelyn met Clarence I. Knutson, and Eastern Montana farm boy, that was working out there in a ship-yard. Clarence and Evelyn were married March 9, 1943 and "within a few months" they moved to Glendive, Montana, near to where Clarence grew up and not to far from Glen Ullin, where Evelyn grew up. They moved to rural Richey in the Spring of 1944 and they lived in, or around, Richey, on one farm or another until 1973, when they moved to the Flathead Valley, to be near the kids and the grandkids, after Clarence had a 2nd heart attack and retiring from farming. Evelyn and Clarence raised 7 children and were married nearly 40 years when Clarence passed away. Family, long time friends, music and her faith in God were important aspects of life for Evelyn. Evelyn's faith and church were always important to her, passed down to her by her parents. She was responsible for her children being baptized, attending catechism, confirmation and church, and she followed those beliefs all her life. She was ready for "God to call me home" and she was very much at peace. For recreation in mid-life, Evelyn liked to go bowling and was on several bowling teams. They went to the state tournaments numerous times and went to the National Tournament one time, where they did quite well and which she was proud of. She very much enjoyed visiting long time friends, family sharing knitting time and playing music. She played the piano and a small organ and very much encouraged her kids to play one instrument or another. None of them continued playing into adulthood, but some have a great appreciation for music. She knitted many afghans for kids, grandkids, great-grandkids, and friends. She was always making a special one for the newest, youngest member of a very extended family. Evelyn always had a smile and she whistled a lot in her younger years, even though her several kids many times gave her a reason not to! Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Clarence, her parents, two sisters, two brothers, and one son, Dale Robert in 1965. Evelyn is survived by her chiuldren Douglas (Lin) of Kalispell, Rodney (Melva) of Ronan, and Bob Boese of Bigfork, Larry (M.J.) of Priest River, Idaho, Lonnie (Swede) and Leona HInsdale and Terry of Bigfork; additionally 14 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Thank You to the caring staff of Lake View Care Center and the hospice organization during Evelyn's final day. Burial of ashes will be at 10:15 AM, Thursday August 14, 2014 at Bethany Lutheran Church Cemetery on Swan River Road in Bigfork. The Memorial Service will follow at the Church at Creston, 5447 Montana Hwy 35, Creston, at 11:00 A.M., on Thursday August 14, 2014. A luncheon will follow the service.
