Florence Fern (Nelson) Ross, affectionately known as "Flossie" was called to her eternal home on Aug. 23, 2024, at the age of 92, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on April 2, 1932, in Wichita, Kansas, to Herb and Frances Nelson. Flossie was the eldest of seven siblings: Harvey, Marlene, Vivian, Dorothy, Judi and Herbie. Her life was a testament to her deep faith and boundless love for her family and community.
Raised on a farm with her parents, siblings, and grandparents, Flossie developed a deep love for animals. She cared for a pig, calf, chicken, and a lamb during her childhood, embodying the nurturing spirit that would become a hallmark of her life. As the eldest sister, she embraced the caretaker role, a legacy of compassion and responsibility that she carried throughout her 92 years.
Flossie attended a one-room school in Kendall, Kansas, through the 10th grade. She finished high school in Lamar, Colorado in 1950 and graduated from Colorado Springs business college in 1952.In 1952, Flossie married her high school sweetheart, Glenn Ross. Together they raised four beloved children: Ken, Cheryl, Bruce, and Kathy. The Ross family moved from Colorado to Montana in 1965, where they operated the bustling Yellow Bay Store on the East Shore of Flathead Lake. Each of the six members of the Ross family worked together for the success of the store and the family cherry orchard. Flossie’s commitment to her family was evident in every aspect of her life. As a grandmother to 10, and great-grandmother to fourteen, she was a beacon of love and encouragement. Whether attending sporting events, musical concerts, or graduations, Flossie and Glenn could always be found in the bleachers. Their presence was a source of unwavering support and pride. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew her as Nanny or Granny. Flossie loved her grandchildren immensely and her love extended to many of their friends and teammates, with many looking up to her as a grandmother of their own. Her favorite place was on Flathead Lake, surrounded by her family and playing rounds and rounds of Skipbo, Canasta, Uno and Spoons. Although she loved each of her children and grandchildren so dearly, she was not known to give up a win easily in any of these games. She held onto her competitive spirit for all her 92 years. Flossie loved to hold her bird Sammy and her pups ChiChi and Sissy on her lap while she shared family stories. She valued connection in her family and passed that significance to each of her children and grandchildren. She built a large and adoring family that will continue to cherish each other because of the example she set for generations to come. Her life was a profound reflection of her faith. She lived with a spirit of grace and kindness, finding joy in the simple blessings and the company of those she loved. Her legacy is one of deep spiritual faith, unconditional love, and a profound commitment to her family.
