He was born May 3, 1921, to Herman and Mary Hoehn in Madison Lake, Minn. He was raised there and farmed with his dad at an early age. The family moved to Oshawa, Minn., and farmed there.
He answered his call to service in World War II, from 1944-1946, serving in the Army. He was stationed in the Philippines and Japan. He was awarded for expert marksmanship.
After service, he returned home and farmed and did custom baling for the next 10 years. He then bought the family farm with his brother, Alfred, and they were in partnership.
On Aug. 3, 1954, Gilbert married Laurene Juenemann in Clements, Minn. He raised his family in rural St. Peter, Minn. He moved his family to the Kalispell area in 1973. While building a home and developing his land, he worked as an equipment operator at the Grosswiler farm. Being very innovative and independent, he was very self-sufficient.
Raised as a farmer, he loved to see things grow and was still an avid organic gardener at the age of 92. He was one of the first vendors of the farmers market when it originated at the Conrad Bank parking lot. He loved to share his knowledge of agriculture.
Gilbert was a caring, humble and compassionate man. His life was an example of his devotion to his Catholic faith. He cared deeply for his family and neighbors and was willing to help whenever they needed anything.
