Leslie Wayne Schlegel, 59, passed away of a heart attack Sept. 4, 2010, while doing what he loved, packing in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Les was born Oct. 25, 1950, in Kalispell to Louis William Bill and Carol Martha (Kahn) Schlegel. He was raised and attended school in Kalispell. Les married Mary Jane Hagen on Aug. 22, 1969, at Central Bible Church in Kalispell. They raised their three children, Wayne, Karen, and Jerry, in West Valley. He served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Shields as a Petty Officer in the Navy as an engine room mechanic from 1970 to 1972. For Les very first job, he would ride his bike from Kalispell to Bigfork to hay with his Uncle Don Evenson; subsequent jobs included working at a service station, Bob Ewings Furniture, road construction with Fred King, service in the U.S. Navy, heavy construction, Flathead County, hauling logs for Phil Stevens, then independently hauling logs, gravel pit and eventually owner/operator of Les Schlegel Enterprises Inc., which serviced chip hauling, logging and heavy construction. Les was very involved in community activities including the West Valley Volunteer Fire and Rescue (34 years) as captain, assistant chief and battalion chief; West Valley Pee Wee Baseball and Flathead Valley All Stars coach (six years); and 4-H and FFA livestock sales. His hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, horseback riding, boating, snowcatting, camping, fire department, family history, traveling and spending time with family and friends. Survivors include wife, Mary J. (Hagen) Schlegel of 41 years; father Louis Bill W. Schlegel; son, Wayne L. Schlegel and wife Denise of Kalispell; daughter, Karen M. Graham and husband Scott of Star, Idaho; son, Jerry A. Schlegel of Somers and Tanya; brothers, Ronnie and Vickie, Mike and Julainne, and Mark of Kalispell; sister, Sandy and Jeff of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; grandchildren, Casey of Marysville, Wash., Shelby and Royce of Kalispell, Marlie and Ashlyn of Star, Idaho, and Joel and Kobe of Somers; and great-grandson Reiley of Kalispell, as well as numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Les was preceded in death by his mother, Carol Martha (Kahn) Schlegel; mother-in-law, LeVerna Hagen; grandmothers, Lillian Evenson Atteberry and Gladys Mae Markham Schlegel; and grandfathers Clarence Atteberry, George Kahn Sr. and Louis M. Schlegel.
