Michael Owens

May 29, 1972 — July 10, 2013

Michael "Big O" Owens, 41, passed away after a two-and-a-half-year battle with cancer on July 10, 2013, in Kalispell at the home of his brother Abram. He wasn't alone; a family member was holding his hand. He wasn't afraid as his faith was solid and unwavering. His last day was filled with listening to all the beautiful messages left for him by those whose lives he touched and those who supported him during these last two years.

Mike was born on May 29, 1972, and lived nearly all of his life in Kalispell. He was a longtime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found great comfort in its community and teachings.

He was an avid participant in local sports from a young age, playing all levels of youth baseball and football. Mike graduated from Flathead High School in 1990, playing football as a Flathead Brave and baseball as a Kalispell Laker. For nearly the last 20 years, Mike was intensely involved in adult softball. He played, organized teams and tournaments, and generally made his presence felt on the fields here and throughout the state.

Until his illness, Mike worked as a driver for UPS for over a decade, always brightening customers' days with his jokes, smiles and silly songs. Of all the things in Mike's life, he was most proud of his children. The birth of his daughter gave him a strength and calmness that forever changed him, a change that was deepened by the birth of his son. A dedicated father, he made every attempt to spend time with them and attend their every event. He loved taking his children fishing and going with them to Griz football games.

He is survived by his children, Hayden and Michael; their mother, Aimee Neff; his parents, Veldon "Mike" and Debbie Owens, and Denise Owens; his siblings and their families, Jane Owens and her son Owen; Steven and Heather Owens, and their sons Isiah and Elijah; Laura and Jake Sullenger, and their son Jacobe; Suzanne Owens and her son Daniel; Michael and Laura Roy, and their children Parker and Phoebe; Abram Owens; and James Owens; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and countless friends and supporters.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, with a potluck luncheon to follow in the Expo Building at the Flathead County Fairgrounds.

In lieu of flowers, please bring a potluck dish to share, contribute to the Mike Owens Benefit established at Mountain West Bank, or make a donation to the charity of your choice.
