Monna Lou (Miller) McQuirk, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2013, surrounded by her family and dedicated caregivers.
Monna Lou was born on Aug. 8, 1924, in Willard, Ohio, to Theodore and Thelma Miller, joining two brothers.
After high school she and a friend ventured to Hollywood to become a "Rosie the Riveter" for the war effort. Ever fashion conscious, one evening she noticed her favorite shoes missing from their apartment. She went looking for her roommate to see if she had "borrowed" them. She found her shoes that evening, as well as her future husband, John McQuirk Jr., who was stationed there in the Air Force.
Monna Lou and John married Oct. 2, 1943, returning to his home in the Flathead Valley, where they raised their four daughters.
She was a dedicated homemaker and excellent cook, always willing to teach others her homemaking skills, had a passion for reading and was avid bridge player in local clubs. She was an amazing seamstress and passed many Montana winter months knitting and crocheting.
Mom loved the summers at the family cabin on Echo Lake, including many swimming and gatherings with family, cousins and friends. She enjoyed snowmobiling, traveled to the Oregon and Washington coasts to camp and fish and a trip to Ohio, where she visited her many nieces and nephews.
We will miss her dearly, as will the many friends she made through her lifetime, who would seek her out for her wisdom, companionship and sense of humor.
Monna Lou was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, John McQuirk Jr.; her daughter, Colleen Smith; and her brothers, Bill and Wayne Miller, of Ohio.
She is survived by three daughters, Sandi McQuirk-Linus and husband Mike of Seattle, and Mary Beth Pollock and Leslie McQuirk of Kalispell; eight grandchildren, Dave and Dean Gunderson of Los Angeles, Matt Smith and Lisa Smith-McKenzie of Vancouver, Wash., John Pollock and wife Janet of Boise, Idaho, Alicia Kasberg and husband Chris Prettyboy of Kalispell, Justin Kasberg and wife Tamar of Lolo, and Thomas Mann of Great Falls; numerous nieces and nephews in Ohio and nine great grandchildren.
Her daughters will host a graveside memorial service for family and friends 11 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at C.E. Conrad Memorial Cemetery, with a reception to follow at the family home of Monna and John.
