Robert D. Burkes, 96, died Wednesday from a stroke at the Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, MT. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, August 29 at 10 a.m. at the Riverside National Cemetery.
Robert was born in Hattisburg, MS, and raised in New Orleans, LA, but made Riverside his home after a transfer to March Air Force Base and the subsequent marriage to Riverside native, Betty Peterson. After his discharge from active duty, Robert continued to serve as a reserve officer until his retirement as a Lt. Colonel in 1975. During this time, he was employed by and eventually became the president of Johnson, Carvell, and Murphy, a wholesale food manufacturer's representative in Los Angeles, CA.
Robert was a member of Riverside Bible Church, Victoria Community Church, and The Gideons International until his move to be near family in Montana. He is survived by his brother, Louis G. Burkes of New Orleans, LA, daughters Carolyn Root and Deborah Ward, both Riverside natives residing in Kalispell, MT, five grandchildren, and two great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to: The Gideons International, PO Box 140800, Nashville, TN 37214-0800 or tgi@gideons.org.
