Roland Helmer Engdahl, 88, passed away May 9, 2014, at his home after a lengthy illness.
Roland was born Feb. 11, 1926, in Williamsport, Pa., to Gustaf A. and Sara E. (Hampton) Engdahl. Roland attended school in Williamsport, and in 1944, he entered the U.S. Army.
In 1946, he married Virginia E. Moyer in Williamsport and continued to serve our country honorably with the 293rd Field Artillery Observation Battalion until 1947. He also served in the 2nd Infantry Division and earned the Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Bronze Service Star.
After the service Roland held various jobs in order to support his family. He became a millwright for Bethlehem Steel in Williamsport where, after a long career with the company, he retired.
He served as a Boy Scout leader, he donated his time to provide transportation for the Amish community and financially supported numerous charitable organizations.
Roland enjoyed woodworking, fishing, gardening, rodeos, bird watching, camping, the outdoors, hunting, reading books, (especially Western novels) and many other activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Virginia, brother Jon, one grandson and two great-grandsons.
Roland is survived by his children, Dennis and Donna Engdahl of Lewisburg, Pa., Arvid and Sally Engdahl of Wyalusing, Pa., Debra and James Gramley of Lock Haven, Pa., Susan and Michael Sweigart of Columbia Falls, Barry and Diane Engdahl of Jersey Shore, Pa., Roland and Theresa Engdahl of Sterling, Va., Virginia and David Falls of Waterville, Pa., and Cynthia and Randal Remington of Somers; 21 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today, May 14, at Buffalo Hill Funeral Home, with military honors to follow at Glacier Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
