Sandra was born to Everett and Ruby on December 29, 1937, in Arbyrd Missouri where she joined her older sister Betty. Not long after, Sonny and Jody joined the family as her younger siblings. She described her childhood as a perfect upbringing, and although times were tough, her caring selfless nature made her decide to quit school so she could financially help her family by picking cotton. Her desire to have her diploma led her to achieve her GED in later years.
Sandy married Virgil Kirkland on May 8, 1967, in Coeur d’Alene Idaho. They resided in Superior Montana where they drove the school bus together. They enjoyed the peaceful solitude of Superior and the companionship of the Verley’s. After raising her family there, they moved to Kalispell where she drove the school bus for Head Start. She couldn’t touch the pedals so she duct taped blocks to the pedals and raced around Kalispell greeting the kids with her sweet smile. She enjoyed getting to know the children and families she drove for.
She also loved camping. Large family camping trips were her preference. The serenity, being surrounded by her family, and the many fish fries brought her sparkling personality to life. She took immense pleasure in letting Jody and Leon know that is how to camp the Montana way. She loved the scenery and togetherness, although any water above the shins made her a little nervous!
Sandy made many afghan's. She was an incredible crocheter and quilter. She loved getting together with her friends to crochet blankets for children, grandchildren, and even great grandchildren. Her talents are legendary as she won the grand prize at the Sanders County fair. That banket is treasured by Addi to this day.
Her competitive spirit while playing cards brought out her spark to be the winner! Occasionally, her family had to admit she cheated to win, but with that twinkle in her eye, how could you possibly be mad at her?
Sandy’s sister Jody was also her lifelong friend. She cherished her and was instinctually protective of “her little sister.” The memories of their countless talks, tears, laughter, and joy will live on through the lives of everyone that understood their relationship.
Sandy had a large family she loved wholeheartedly. She opened her arms to them anytime, and her heartfelt excitement to see them never stopped. She had unique relationships with each person. She was proud of everyone for who they were, supported them through their difficulties, and offered advice when needed - as only Grammy could do. When she needed support and strength from someone, she turned to her son Dan, as the relationship they had was incredible. He was her hero.
Sandy also appreciated the time spent with her church family. the Zemacke’s, Marilyn Schultz, Benny Kingsley, Marietta, and Virginia.
Sandy’s love for her children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and great grandchildren was unconditional. Her grandchildren will miss her whistles, her butt pinching, weekly Cislo's breakfasts, and her beautiful soul.
Sandy is survived by her sister Jody (Leon), her son Dan (Kim), her stepchildren Debbie (Gary), Keevin (Judy), and Lane (Helen), and daughter in law Becky. Many nieces and nephews, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her energy and presence will be missed daily.
John 15:12: "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you."
Sandy believed in love. She knew that love means forgiving, accepting, and honoring others, even if they are different or difficult. The ability to love others comes from God, and we can only give love when our hearts are full of God’s love.
Sandy’s presence in our lives brought immeasurable joy, love, and laughter, and for that we are forever grateful.
