Steve Herriges was born Aug. 27, 1961, in Long Beach, Calif.; the fourth of six children, to James and Ina Herriges.
He passed away on July 7, 2012, at his home in Kalispell.
As he was born into a military family, they moved a lot; from California to Bremerton, Spokane and Libby, until returning to Kalispell, their hometown. Steve attended schools in Kalispell, graduating from Flathead High School (Laser).
His first job as a young adult was with a seismograph crew with his older brother, Nic, traveling throughout Montana and Wyoming. He would recount his experiences in this field throughout the years. For one thing, he learned to love helicopters and had aspired to become a pilot. Sadly, he never was able to fulfill that dream.
When he returned home, he learned the drywall trade which took him to Utah, California, Washington, Arizona and around Montana. He worked with his brother Duane and friend Tony in his profession.
While in California, he attended a computer technical school where he graduated at the top of his class and earned his CCNA with A+ and C+ certification. He was then employed by the County of Sonoma for many years.
His was a free spirit, traveling often on his bright red Honda Goldwing motorcycle between California and Kalispell.
He married Michele Shipley and they later divorced. He traveled to Michigan where he worked as a contractor with the Ford Motor Co. for a time. Upon his return to Kalispell, he worked as a drywaller and then for TeleTech.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and his beloved nephew.
He is survived by his mother, Ina; his daughter, Becky, of Havre; the love and light of his life, his son, "'My Buddy," Brandon; his brothers, Nic of Portland, Jim of Fairbanks Alaska, Duane and Eric ("Ian" to Steve), and sister Dianne Buck, all of Kalispell.
Steve will be lovingly remembered for his spontaneous, infectious laugh, and his gift of gab. He was truly a "people person" and touched many lives. He was a giving, generous and caring man with willing, helping hands and a great big heart. He was happiest when surrounded by friends and family. He could come up with a joke for most any occasion and could keep them coming one after another. His favorite songs he knew by heart, and loved to come out with snippets of them as the occasion arose.
A world without Steve is a sadder world and his spirit will be sorely missed by us all.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, July 16, at the Buffalo Hill Funeral Home. The setting is very informal and casual so feel free to bring your favorite stories and memories of Steve. An outdoor reception will follow at Tim and Dianne Buck's home at 728 Hoffman Draw, west of Kalispell in Kila.
