The House that Steve Built
Three years after a brain cancer diagnosis, and two weeks after his final ski, Steve took his last breaths January 29. It was just after 5am, when he would have been on his way to Glacier, or to run, bike, ski, or kayak. He was surrounded by his wife and daughters, as a song written by his brother played.
Loving husband and soulmate to Patti Jeanne, beloved father of Skylar, Maegan, Sara, and son in law Paul, proudest of grandfathers to Xander and Jasper, eldest son of Doris and Walter, inspiration to siblings Cindy, Marc, and Jeff, fixture of and friend to all in Montana’s vast outdoor competitive sporting communities, and to all who appreciate the beauty, power, and peace of nature.
Steve possessed a high intellect, a sharp wit, and a quiet cool. He saw every project and challenge as if it were a giant Erector set. Whether it was building his home and family, working on his bikes and physical conditioning, or his brilliant photography and his intense love and knowledge of music, Steve’s view was unique.
Aside from his family, his greatest joy was the outdoors. He greeted each day, often before the sun, to venture alone into the deepest of wilderness that his beloved Glacier National Park possessed, to tend to the trails, the woods and wildlife. With the sun just peering over the most distant peak, the far off howl of a lone wolf, and the screech of an owl overhead, Steve was alive.
A celebration of Steve's life will be planned for the spring, when friends and family from out of state can visit and enjoy Montana. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Montana Wild Wings Recovery Center. Friends are encouraged to visit our website at www.buffalohillfh.com to leave notes of condolences for the family.
